Splash Academy is a swimming service that offers an extensive range of activities and courses for participants of all ages and abilities, as well as providing professional development opportunities for teachers and coaches of many aquatic disciplines.
Splash Academy began life in 2000, when on returning from Sydney Patsy decided to provide much needed lessons for a growing community. Over the past 21 years Splash has taught 1,000s of children to swim ensuring children learn excellent strokes in a safe, comfortable and stimulated manner. Patsy’s team of teachers are a professional team of which she is extremely proud and many have been with her since the early days. What’s more, children from Splash have become assistant teachers, teachers, lifeguards and Duke of Edinburgh student volunteers, a true credit to Splash Academy.
Having been based at Hinchingbrooke school for 21 years we are now at a new location at Sawtry Academy Leisure. This modern facility offers great sporting opportunities with a strong sense of community and is the ideal location for Splash to continue its passion to providing learn to swim and aquatic opportunities of the highest standard.
ABOUT OUR PATSY (Founder/Owner)
Patsy was a swimmer who swum up to national level and has many wonderful memories of travelling far and wide to competitions with her dad, swimming against Wales and Scotland in 1970. Volunteering as a helper at 14, Patsy trained to teach by the age of 18. Having taught for over 40 years she is now teaching fourth generation, which she finds a great honour. One of Patsy's most privileged teaching moments was teaching her mum to swim when she was over 50 years old so that she could fulfil her dream to swim in the Serpentine, which she did alongside her granddaughter Amanda.
Patsy’s achievements are significant (although she’s very modest about them!). Locally, Patsy was Head coach at St Ives swimming club for over 13 years where she celebrated many successes at regional and national level. Globally(!) Patsy was appointed head coach of the British Paralympic swim team in 1993 and during that time she attended World, European and Paralympic events and her medal tally was table winning, with the teams producing outstanding results and Patsy also being appointed head coach of the disability sport England development squad until 2001.
Patsy’s achievements haven’t gone unnoticed! She was acknowledged for her Paralympic work by the British swimming coaches association with a certificate of coaching excellence, and was given the Torch Trophy trust award at Queens Tennis club by her Royal Highness Princess Michael of Kent and also football legend Sir Bobby Charlton CBE. In June 2017, Patsy was awarded the Cross of Merit from John Holden, Regional Officer, of the Swimming Teachers’ Association UK (STA). It's a prestigious national award to recognise Patsy's lifetime of service to the sport. You can read more here.
Patsy’s passion and expertise for swimming and teaching has not just been restricted to swimming lessons . . .
As a lecturer she has trained 1,000's of teachers at Splash Academy as an ASA education centre which has an excellent reputation with high standards nationally, born out by its excellent ‘Ofsted’ type reports that are carried out regularly, and see people travel from all over the country to train at Hinchingbrooke school. She has been guest speaker at both the national tutors and teachers conferences and Bedford university and seen her articles published in swimming magazines.
Patsy trained local school teachers via the School Sports Partnership and continues to train teachers across the counties by request.
Aside from Splash, Patsy spent over 20 years running and teaching the Upside Down swimming club for special needs children on a voluntary basis. When not on the poolside or in the Splash Office getting all her ducks in a row, Patsy loves nothing more than playing with the grandchildren, travelling or simply relaxing with a good book and a cuppa!
ABOUT OUR TEACHERS
All our swimming teachers are vivacious, enthusiastic, professional, caring and fun. They have many strengths in their depth of experience as individuals and as part of the Splash Academy team. In fact, the staff at Splash collectively have 177 years of swimming teaching experience between them!
With a thirst to extend and develop their knowledge further they regularly attend teacher training opportunities as part of their continual professional development. All members of staff have attended a variety of Amateur Swimming Association and Swimming Teachers Association training opportunities to develop them as qualified swimming teachers at different levels. It is Splash Academy's policy that all members of staff over 16 years of age are DBS checked every three years.
